How to fix Android Wear if the watch isn’t showing information from your phone

I recently discovered by accident a potential bug, or at least odd behavior, with regards to Android Wear and restoring a backup of your phone from TWRP recovery. The smartwatch and Android phone will reconnect and appear to be without problem. Except, there is a problem. The watch won’t update or display any information from the phone. It’s as if they’re disconnected despite saying that they are connected. The weather doesn’t display or update, the Google Fit fitness data such as steps or calories or distance doesn’t update, notification cards don’t display, etc. 

The good news is this is a quick fix. I wish I could explain why this happens because I love to understand everything I dabble in, but I really don’t know the reason for the behavior. And the fix is to simply clear the app data for the Android Wear app on your phone. No need to unpair or factory reset either the phone or the watch. Follow the steps below as closely as you can to fix your own problem. Note that the steps may vary between phone and Android version. These steps are for a Nexus 6 running Android 7.1.1. 

  1. Open Android Settings
  2. Tap on Apps
  3. Scroll to Android Wear and tap on it
  4. Tap Storage
  5. Tap Clear Data
  6. Open the Android Wear app
  7. Follow any prompts that appear (but I don’t think there are any).
  8. Done.
