For months, I was annoyed by a bug in the Gmail app on my Android devices and frustrated that I couldn’t find a solution or acknowledgement of the problem anywhere. The bug being that received Exchange email would display the message I had sent in the notification instead of the new message. Thanks to a Redditor recently, I was given a solution to the problem, though it is more of a workaround than anything and the bug still exists as far as I’m concerned.
I’m not sure what caused the problem to begin with, whether it was a Gmail app update or updating to Android 6.0 Marshmallow that introduced it. Regardless, it only affected my Exchange email account for work, but not my Gmail account I use for personal email. I’m not sure if the bug exists for IMAP or POP email accounts, or any other email account for that matter. I also don’t know if the bug is widespread to any specific combination of factors users meet (all Android 6.0 users, for example) or if the problem depends how the Exchange email server is configured. Regardless of why it happens, though, the solution is simple. Look to the direction below if you are facing the same problem yourself.
- Open the Gmail app
- Tap the icon in the top left corner to pull out the left-hand menu
- Tap Settings at the bottom
- Uncheck Conversation view near the top
This has solved the notification problem for me since this had been suggested to me. If you want to help find the reason this option causes this bug, feel free to reach out to me. I won’t be able to resolve it, but I can update information here in hopes someone with the ability to address it finds it and finds it useful.
